Who Knew Olives Had So Many Benefits!
I absolutely love eating olives. They are great on salads, sandwiches, cold pastas, fried with potatoes pickles and onions and I also really enjoy eating them as a snack on top of a club cracker and vegan tofutti cream cheese. Olives are very high in vitamin E and other powerful antioxidants. They are really good for the heart and they may protect against cancer and osteoporosis. Olives are a good source of iron, which is important for the transport of oxygen in red blood cells. They are also filled with copper (to prevent heart disease) and calcium (essential for bone, muscle and nerve function).
Since olives are very rich in antioxidants, they may reduce oxidative damage in the body and help fight infections that are caused by bacteria. This will help prevent things such as stomach ulcers. One thing I was surprised to learn about olives is that they work to reduce pain. This alone makes me want to eat more of them! They contain a compound called oleocanthal that has really strong anti-inflammatory properties mimicking ibuprofen. Crazy right? I am just as shocked about that as you are!
